The Algonqin, circa 2009.
Looks like Hotel Renovations are all the rage these days and the latest hotel to get in on the action is the historic Algonquin Hotel in New York.
USA Today reports that the hotel will actually close for three months at the start of the new year to complete a major overhaul of the guest rooms.
The hotel already did a refurbishment of its lobby back in 2007 along with some guestroom soft good upgrades but the hotel must have needed more, perhaps to keep up with its affiliation as a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel. (Speaking of Autograph, the collection just unveiled a new fancy website you should check-out here. Snazzy!)
Now as excited as we are for the hotel to get some new life, we have so many questions--what will happen to the New Yorker cartoon wallpaper in the hallways? What about the forgotten piano? What will Barbara Carroll do on Sunday afternoons? And most importantly, where is Matilda going to live during the renovations???
While we hunt down the answers to these questions, take a look at this video we shot in 2009 of a larger guest room with general manager Gary Budge doing the voice-over on what makes the Algonquin so great. And it has nothing to do with the look of the place.
