When it comes to the new Public Chicago, Ian Schrager's glorious new hotel, there's not much we miss about the old spot, the Ambassador East. But loyalists, or people looking for some decor with history, can still get a piece of the hotel--by buying its old furniture.
Fort Pitt Furniture Outlet in Chicago specializes in selling off old hotel furniture (mostly from four and five star hotels) and we spied a few pieces from the Ambassador East on their website. Hmmm...yeah, we'll take the new furniture instead.
Still, if you need to decorate your space, and want some luxury flair for less (some armories are going for $79 and a Hyatt 8-piece room package starts at $199), Fort Pitt might be the way to go. The only problem is they are in Chicago and you have to visit their warehouse to buy the pieces. No online orders.
SLS Hotels Now Have a Loyalty Program, sbePREFERRED
If you love the staying the night at the SLS Hotel or The Redbury and dining on sushi at Katsuya and are totally going to the Hyde Lounge when it opens at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, then you should probably sign up for the brand-new sbe loyalty program called, sbePREFFERED FRIENDS.
Being a preferred friend will not only help you earn rewards for your sbe dedication across hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and even spas but it will also get you access to the Global Concierge, which offers "lifestyle experiences worldwide."
Here's a bit on how it works:
Would You Pay for More WiFi Bandwidth in Your Hotel Room?
Welcome to our OpenThreads, a free-for-all forum on a hotel-related topic. This is where you can tell us how you, the hotel guest, operates inside a hotel, not the other way around. So jump right in and comment away!
Perhaps the next time we spy iPads in the guestrooms, we shouldn't geek out so much as these tablet devices might be the reason why a hotel's WiFi network is so slow.
NYT biz travel reporter Joe Sharkey says that hotels blame the rapid rise of the iPad and other tablet devices for putting a strain on their network's bandwidth capability. That's because people are checking in and logging on not just with their iPad but their laptop and cellphones (Um, yes. Guilty.)
Sharkey quotes David W. Garrison, the chief executive of iBAHN, (you may know iBahn as the company that's always charging you for internet in your Marriott Hotel room) as saying the iPad is "the final nail in the coffin" for the idea that hotel WiFi should be free. Well, so says someone who's business is to charge for WiFi.
However, the bandwidth problem is a big problem. We talked about it during our 2011 Hotel WiFi Report in April and here's what Joe Germanotta of GuestWiFi about the heavy issue:
A New Luxury Spa Hotel Will Access Bath's Natural Hot Springs
A new five-star hotel will bring some friendly competition to the centuries-old Thermae Bath Spa, a naturally-occuring thermal spring which has been in use since the 8th century BC. The English city of Bath (named, appropriately, after its most distinctive feature) is planning a 98-room luxury spa hotel that will access the same hot springs as its world-famous neighbor, the Thermae Bath Spa.
According to This Is Bath, developers of this new property will drill a new borehole 75 meters below street level to access the base of Hetling Spring. Our only piece of advice: keep Steven Tyler away from the construction site; we know how he gets around slippery surfaces.
We Don't Know Who Had It Worse: Steven Tyler's Face, Or The Hotel Shower
"You can't handle the tooth," 63-year-old Steven Tyler joked to Matt Lauer on the Today Show earlier this morning, when the rock star phoned in from South America to explain his recent injury. Apparently, the singer was battling "food poisoning" (yeah right, and his daughter Liv Tyler is actually an Elf Princess) when he lost his balance and fell face first into the shower floor.
Tyler was staying at the Bourbon Hotel in Paraguay, and thanks to his tour manager, located a nearby hospital to stitch up his eye, re-align his face, and fix his broken tooth. Now, that must have been a pretty heavy fall. And knowing what we know, Mr. Tyler can be a little accident prone. So we have to wonder. Who do you think suffered more damage: Steven Tyler's face, or the shower stall?
