Gabon is ready to play its part in staging a successful 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, according to tournament organisers.
The country, located on the west coast of Africa,
was awarded the rights to co-host the Confederation of African
Football’s (CAF) showpiece tournament with neighbour Equatorial Guinea
in July 2007. The 2012 Cup of Nations is set to commence on January 21
with the draw for the competition taking place on Saturday. Work is
continuing to complete the two new stadia and training facilities Gabon
is developing for the event.
“We are on time and at the end of October, all our stadia will be ready,” Gabon organising committee spokesman Louis-Claude Moundzieoud told BBC Sport. A new stadium has been developed on the outskirts of the capital Libreville and another in the south-eastern city of Franceville. Libreville’s stadium will be unveiled next month as Gabon takes on Brazil in a showpiece friendly.
Plans are in place to hand over some of the training facilities to the official foundation of Cameroon superstar Samuel Eto’o, which plans to open a football academy and school in the capital, and officials are confident that a strong legacy is in place for the facilities. “All the hosting infrastructures and the stadia will be part of a bigger programme for the country for sport and for events of world class,” added Marie-Ange Akaga Assuene of Gabon's national works agency.
