Goa needs to protect its beaches

Despite being a small state dependent on beaches for tourism activities, it is surprising that Goa has neither beach profiles, sand texture nor mapped data, said environmental expert Surendra Thakurdesai. He was talking on a Conserving environment and mitigating disasters in coastal zones: the American perspectivea at the International Centre Goa, Dona Paula. Wednesdayas lecture was part of America Days as organized by the American Centre, Mumbai.
Thakurdesai, who was part of an exchange programme on climate change and clean energy in the US, felt clean energy could remedy climate change. He also advocated total restriction of beach-related activities during the monsoon as the season as has a restorative role for beach. Stating that coastlines are hubs of economic activities, Thakurdesai said, All monsoon (beach) activities, especially off-season discounts, should be stopped. Monsoon should be treated as a fallow period. Talking to TOI, Thakurdesai said, as Coastal zone regulations should be strictly adhered to. Constructions on beaches change the outline of the shore causing it to react differently to natural disasters. The arrangement of such constructions is a big issue, but we seem to have a casual approach towards it.
Calling sand dunes a buffer zone that absorbs any tidal impact, he said their destruction in Goa will impact beach-side buildings. Since unlike sand dunes buildings are rigid structures, the impact will be much greater, he said. He advised increasing plantation on beaches to act as sand traps.
