A sunset cruise from Panaji to Cortalim and a cruise in River Sal would be started soon by the tourism authorities to promote tourism and offer more avenues for the tourists visiting the state, said sources in the state administration. The sources further said that the beaches of Goa being the main assets for the promotion of tourism, the tourism department ensures that the existing facilities on the beaches are not only maintained but also improved wherever necessary.
Access roads, parking facilities, illumination of the beaches, modern toilet facilities are being provided with a view to enable even the private sector to invest in tourist facilities and services, the sources said, adding among the development works is an open bus parking at Panaji, where almost 98 per cent of the work has been completed. Besides, pathway to jetty at Panaji has already been completed and would be opened for pubic soon. The beach safety management system has been extended to all the coastal areas.
The sources further said that last year, the tourism department also obtained approval from the central government for setting up Integrated Development of Heritage and Hinterland Tourism with a financial assistance to the tune of ` 43.09 crore. The state government would share an amount of ` 31.67 crore from the total expenditure and the project would be completed within three years.
Besides, the government has accepted the offer of M/s Leading Hotels Pvt Ltd, New Delhi, for setting up of a golf course and allied services at Terekhol in the Pernem taluka under public-private partnership project for which the letter of intent has already been issued said the sources adding that some representations received from mundkar association against the project are being examined.
The sources also stated that the central government has approved setting up of Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology at Farmagudi under a society and an amount of ` 12 crore has been sanctioned. The project would come up in an area admeasuring 40,000 square metres near Goa Engineering College. This would be the second Institute of Hotel Management in the state.
Similarly, a proposal of tourism infrastructure development of Colva Circuit, South Goa, has been approved by tourism ministry of central government and sanctioned an amount of ` 7.58 crore. The tourism department also has obtained approval for setting up a convention centre near Bal Bhavan at Campal, Panaji at an expenditure of ` 5 crore. The tourism department also has a proposal for construction of amphi-theatre on its property at Merces at an expenditure of ` 2.12 crore.
The project would be taken up soon. Similarly, dismantling of M V River Princess vessel started in March 2011 and 40 per cent of the work has been completed. The cutting of the vessel has now been stopped due to bad weather conditions and the same would be resumed after the monsoon season. The government in an attempt to promote tourism further has proposed to introduce helicopter services with the association of private operators. The central government assistance of ` 75 lakh would be used for the construction of helipadsand heliports.
