But this club is not a full-fledged marina. When the marina project would materialise the boats would dock in Goa for a month or two before proceeding on their way. Many of the boats could also berth in the state for the monsoon before setting off on their way after the end of the monsoon.When in Goa, occupants of these boats would take in food, fuel and have repairs to yachts, if any, which would boost high-end tourism.Country’s first marina — albeit a temporary one — was opened in Panaji, which was built by a Mumbai businessman, Mr Rajiv Somani.
Eleven yachts, which had participated in the Vasco da Gama Yacht Rally, were berthed at the marina. At that time Mr Somani had told the media that he had plans to build and develop a second marina in Goa.Stating that many marina projects have not seen light of the day due to various reasons, the sources said the country was at the early stage of developing leisure boating. There are over 1,000 leisure boats and consumerist lifestyle is fostering interest in leisure boating.
