Hindu New Year 2013

India celebrates a number of New Year in different regions of the country, even though the Indians also observe the International New Year along with the whole world. The Hindu New Year 2013 is mainly based on the religious believes. The customs and traditions of Hindu New Year differ from one state to another. For example, the Indians who live in the western region of the country celebrate New Year in the month of October and in some other region, people celebrate New Year in Diwali while in eastern region, they observe New Year in April.

Not only the time, but the celebrations also differ from one state to another. In north India, people decorate their houses with lights and colors. In central India, people fly an orange flag on the top of their house or building on New Year. In east India, people buy gifts for their near and dear ones. In south India, the women of the house decorate a special tray, consisting of gifts, foods, and flowers. It is a custom that the children of the house must close their eyes in the morning until the tray will be brought in front of them.

  • New Year in West Bengal:New Year in West Bengal, also called “Poila Baisakh' will start on 14th or 15th April. People buy new cloths and give gifts to their family and friends.
  • New Year in Assam:New Year 2013 in Assam will start on 14th or 15th of April according to the regional calendar.
  • New Year in Sikkim:In Sikkim the observance of New Year will be initiated on the 18th day of the 10th month according to the Tibetan Lunar Calendar.
  • New Year in Gujarat:In Gujarat, the celebrates of New Year will start on the occasion of Karthik Shukla Pratipada.
  • New Year in Maharashtra:According to the regional calendar, New Year 2013 in Maharashtra will start in the month of Chaitra.
  • New Year in Punjab:The celebrations of New Year 2013 will start on 13th April. They lit their houses with lights during the New Year.
  • In Kerala:New Year in Kerala will be celebrated in Medam month and when the Sun will enter in the constellation Leo.
  • New Year in Tamil Nadu:New Year 2013 in Tamil Nadu will be celebrated on either 13th or 14th of April.
  • New Year in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka:New Year in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh will be observed on the Chaitra Shuddha Prathipade.

Indians celebrate the New Year with lots of colors and lights. One of the favorite New Year activities among Hindus are rangali making and cracking fireworks. People perform puja of Goddess Laxmi or Lord Ganesha in the evening and engage in these activities. They also buy gifts for their family and friends. Guests visit their houses during the New Year celebrations and wish each other for New Year. There is a popular trend of exchanging gifts to family and friends. The guests bring sweets and coins when they visit someone's house.

Apart from the regional Hindu New Year 2013, the International New Year on January 1 is also celebrated with élan. People go for New Year parties in different clubs and pubs while some arrange for parties at their own houses. Fireworks and firecrackers are the most common forms of New Year 2013 celebrations in India. They clean and decorate their houses to welcome the New Year.
