Iranian
New Year is one of the most important festivals in Iran. Iranian New
Year 2013 will take place on the first day of spring. The local people
in Iran mostly believe in Islam. According to the Georgian calendar, the
New Year in Iran 2013 will fall on March 21. The traditional name of
the New Year festival in Iran is Nowruz or Noruz. The first of the first
month is known as Favardin.
The people of the country start preparing for this day much before it occurs. According to the Iranian New Year traditions, a cannon sound is made in every cities and villages at the juncture of the New Year. When the local people hear the noise, they start celebrating the New Year. After the cannon sound is heard, people start wishing a happy new Year to their near and dear ones. There is also a tradition of presenting gifts to each other. The elders give New Year gifts to the younger people. Mostly, it is seen that gold and silver coins are gifted to them. The New Year gift is known as aidi.
Decoration is another important part, which they do to welcome the New Year. Newly grown crops and grains are used as an important decorative element. They grow barley, lentil, and wheat beforehand in the fields. They make various shapes and patterns in their houses. These decorations are the symbol of prosperity and growth. The home made decorations are kept for thirteen day and after that they are thrown away from the river.
During the occasion of Iranian New Year 2013, the Iranians set a table along with seven articles. These seven items start with ‘S' in the local language. The items are:
The special table also consists of a number of items such as candles, a bowl of rose water, colored eggs, one copy of the Holy Koran, and a mirror.
On Iranian New Year, people clean their houses. According to the tradition, they clean their houses during the day time. They buy cloths for their family and friends. Some people prefer to make the cloths for their near and dear ones. Buying or making cloths is mandatory custom for them. If they cannot afford to buy too many cloths, they try to buy at least one clothing item and one pair of shoes.
On New Years day, family and friends visit each other houses. When everyone gathers at a place, they prepare for the grand feast. A traditional New Year dinner consists of some traditional food items such as Nune Shekari, Badam Choragi, and Baklava. In accordance with the popular tradition, Iranians exchange eggs as gifts. Exchanging of eggs suggest new beginning and it also marks a new start for a new year. In some regions, some people light fires and jump over them, as there is a belief that they can get rid of all the bad omens for the next one year.
