New Year 2013 will be observed on March 21. The celebrations of Persian
New Year are known as Nowruz. Even though the celebrations start with
the official announcement after a certain planetary position, but
generally Persian new Year falls on March 21. Persian New Year is
observed on the first day of spring according to the Persian calendar.
In Persian language, Nowruz refers to a new day. The new day is marked
as the renewal and revival of life. The Iranian families celebrate the
festival together. They fellow the Persian New Year traditions to
celebrate Nowruz. Everyone observe the day with new desires, new wishes,
new hope, and new optimism.
After the official announcement of Noruz or Persian New Year, the people of Persia get to know that it is the first day of spring. Noruz is a family-oriented festival. The family members gathers and sit together around the haft-sin table in order to offer a prayer of happiness and good luck. All the members of the family kiss each other after the prayer. There is another tradition called Sabzeh, in which they throw lentil or wheat in the running water to get rid of all bud luck and evil spirits.
Food is an important part of Nowruz 2013. New Year dinner in Persia offers a lavish setting. Not only the foods, but also the dinner table is decorated with a great zeal. They arrange for wines and hallelujah during dinner. A special meal is prepared for the dinner. The traditional Persian New Year dinner consists of a special rice with fish, kuku sabzi, sabzi polo, and other herbs. Sizdeh bedar, a noddle soup is another indispensable dish for New Year dinner.
After the celebrations, started on the first day of Spring, the celebrations continue until the 12th day of the month. During the period, people visit each other's place and exchange gifts. Traditionally, children get gifts from their elders and this tradition is known as Eidi. After the 12th day, they stop restricting themselves with the four walls of a house and they go for outdoor feast or picnic. The 13th day of the month is considered very unlucky. It is believed that if someone stays at home on the 13th day, fortune will follow him in the New Year.
