Tibetan New Year 2013

Tibetan New Year is also known as Losar. Lo stands for year while sar stands for new. It is the most significant holiday in Tibet. Apart from Tibet, the New Year is also celebrated in Sherpa, Yolmo, and Bhutan. Generally, Tibetan New Year 2013 celebrations will start from March 5. It is a 15-day festival while the first three days are the main part of the festival observance. These three days are celebrated with lots of customary traditions. For example, on the first day of Losar 2013, the people of Tibet make and drink a special beverage, changkol. changkol is made of chhaang, a Tibetan beer.

The first day of the festival is restricted within the family. The family members dress in their best attires and meet for dinner. They do not go out in street on the first day. On the second day, they come out their houses and meet their family and friends. On the third day of celebrations, people visit the local monasteries and they pray for a good year ahead.

Losar or New Year in Tibet is a Buddhist festival. Dalai Lama is the religious master for the Tibetans. According to the popular myth, when Dalai Lama will die, he will shift his soul to a new born baby. They have to find the boy at the time when Dalai Lama will die. The newly born baby will be taken care of, he will be educated with religious duties as he will grow.

According to the tradition, Tibetan New Year is celebrated in the New Moon during the first half of a year. Tibetan calendar is a lunar calendar. New Year celebrations start on the first day of the first month in the Tibetan calendar, but the celebrations start on the 29th day of the twelfth month of the calendar.

The Tibetan New Year is a family oriented festival. The family members together prepare the home to welcome a New Year. They clean and wash their houses with soap. Most of them whitewash their houses during this period. After cleaning the house and the belongings, they put on their festival attires and join in for the Tibetan New Year feast. Tibetan New Year 2013 is more like a family reunion.

Food is an important part of Losar celebrations. Monasteries perform a special ritual with food during Tibetan New Year 2013. They make a special noodle in the monastery. The noodle is called Guthuk. Guthuk is made of different ingredients like grains and cheese. There is also a popular tradition with the Tibetan New Year food.

People put various ingredients in dough balls such as wool, chilies, rice, coal, salt etc. The tradition is that when a person will find any ingredient inside the dough, the item will tell him about his character. For example, if one find a chilly, it refers to the fact that he or she is talkative. If he or she finds salt, this is a good luck charm for the person. If someone finds coal in his or her dough, it suggests that he or she has a black heart.
