HTC continues to be beset with bad news. Following the early launch cancellation in Singapore of the HTC One, the Taiwanese company has just announced that the availability of the smartphone on the island-state will be delayed from mid-March to sometime in April.
In a statement to CNET Asia, a spokesperson said that “in order to serve our customers better, the HTC One will be launched in April 2013 with authorised resellers and mobile operators.”
However, a report from Taiwan brokerage KGI Securities suggests there's more to it than customer satisfaction--it could be due to a low yield in components. In particular, the compact camera module used on its UltraPixel camera.
The brokerage firm lowered its shipping estimate of the HTC One from 4 million units to between 800,000 and 1.2 million, citing "channel checks that indicated production bottlenecks". It also predicted that the company will ship only 10.5 million handsets in the first half, far below the 14 to 15 million units predicted earlier.
We're checking with HTC to see if this delay is global, but the way things are going, this is not a good sign for the company, especially with the Samsung Galaxy S4 being announced next week.
