BANGALORE:
Karnataka legislative assembly speaker Kagodu Thimappa on Thursday said
that to realize their objectives, media must play a major role in
connecting the people with the government.
Participating in a seminar on the "Role of Media and Democracy in Elections", organised by the Indian Union of Journalists (IJU) New Delhi and Karnataka State Journalist Federation (KSJF), he said by healthy democracy, he meant ensuring equitable, social, political and economic justice to the common man. He was confident that media though facing difficulties can bring about a sea change in our democratic set up.
K Amarnath, Member Press Council felt that paid news is hampering democracy and distorting the electoral process. SR Hiremath convener Samaj Parivarthan said "Total freedom of press is the need of the hour and the time has come to insulate the fourth pillar of democracy against all dangers".
Prithvi Reddy of AAP Karnataka said, "The country is old but democracy is young and vibrant. Media should serve as eyes, ears and mouth of society".
