Party-hopper Narbir finds his way back to power


GURGAON: Badshapur  has been associated with all major political parties in the state in his nearly three-decade-long political career. He has also served in governments led by Om Prakash Chautala and Bansi Lal.

The 53-year-old politician started his journey as sarpanch of Gairatpur Bass village in 1983 and, four years later, won from Jatusana constituency as a Lok Dal candidate. The Devi Lal-led party later became Indian National Lok Dal (INLD). Narbir was appointed home minister in the state.

Later, he joined Haryana Vikas Party (HVP) of Chaudhary Bansi Lal. In 1996, he was elected to the state assembly for the second time from Sohna and became a minister in-charge of food and civil supplies, transport and cooperative. Within three years, he parted company with the HVP chief and joined the INLD under Chautala after the fall of the Bansi Lal government. Rao Narbir also had a brief stint with Congress.

In 1999, he tried his luck from Gurgaon assembly segment as a BSP candidate, but lost. In 2004, he joined BJP but the run was not smooth. So, he shifted to Haryana Janhit Congress launched by Kuldeep Bishnoi and contested the 2009 Lok Sabha polls from the Gurgaon seat. But he lost.

Thereafter, he joined BJP. again. He tried to get a party ticket for the Gurgaon Lok Sabha seat this year, but it went to Rao Inderjit Singh.
