Facing an audience..

Am sure everyone has faced this day at sometime in their lives when you had to hold the stage and face a group of experienced people.....how does that feel?
I remember at the age of 24 when i started as a visiting faculty at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, my first day is alive till date. A class of over 40 students all of my age or elder to me, closely observing how would i control them. Little did they know that my philosophy was not in controlling people but giving space....we all like to be around people who make us laugh and someone from whom we can learn. Those 10 years of being there just flew and today when i meet some of my students when they walk up to me and say"Madam remember me, i was in your class from Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan?"......its a feeling of pride and joy. There are no rules that you can make for others around you, BUT for YOURSELF. Rules that you will follow, rules that will allow you to unlearn and then learn.
Its OK to feel nervous before any presentation or facing the audience.....as being nervous will keep you in check as along as you have prepared well for what you are going to present. Being in school was easy as we were told everyday what to do in class and at home. As we left studies we actually forgot that we can never get rid of homework. This" homework" is a very important as it allows to prepare and plan your day and activities without being unorganized.
Starting of your day and few minutes before sleeping are very important ...both personally and professionally. But mostly we overlook this and be very casual about it. If you want your wish list to be fulfilled then you have to ensure that you have your plan ready with milestones set. Here is what I do :
Checklist for morning :
- what are the most urgent things to finish
- what are the things that need to be detailed with timelines
- calendar of meetings with followup calls ( both personal and professional)
- One new person that i would like to connect- Learn & Share
Checklist for Night
- Did i finish my most urgent things
- Did i meet my calendar of meetings and followup's
- How was the conversation with the new connect i established
- Review the day and make notes of good things and few that needed improvement
I always use to look forward to any training session that was organised during my working with organisations.......i always felt excited. I used that as a platform to judge myself. Initially i used to hesitate in raising my hand to ask a question or participate in discussions......which later i realized that what i had in mind someone from the crowd spoke on it. I didn't realize when a time came and i started participating in all discussions and activities without any fear of response from fellow colleagues or bosses.
My rule :
- Never underestimate your self or your responses
- Keep your thoughts simple
- Either you convince the crowd and if not......then step back to think if the track of your thoughts was right before coming to any conclusions.
Learning begins when we Leave behind all the undesired baggage......keep checking your baggage . Its very simple: Even your wardrobe gets space for new clothes when you create that space by discarding the old ones.
